Flora of the Santa Monica Mountains

In addition to continuing some of the activities of this past year, our plans for the next year include:

Stunt Ranch Reserve will host the UC Natural Reserve System Advisory Committee meeting on December 12/13: The first day of activities will include a tour and lunch at Stunt Ranch, a hike in the Cold Creek Preserve, and dinner at the Sagebrush Cantina; on the second day the committee will hold their meeting at the UCLA Faculty Center.
"Squatters" Meeting: A select group of design professionals, key users, and representatives from various organizations and agencies in the Santa Monica Mountains will meet with reserve staff to learn about re-construction plans and to share their ideas and concerns. A series of posters are being designed to highlight Stunt Ranch history, reserve activities, mission/goals of the UC Natural Reserve System, archeological resources, and natural features. A date and guest list for this meeting has not yet been chosen.
UCLA Extension course on "The Natural History and Resource Management Issues in the Santa Monica Mountains": Reserve is working with UCLA Extension on a Spring Quarter workshop. This will be in cooperation with the National Park Service, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Resource Conservation District of Santa Monica Mountains. The first day will be a lecture with 4-5 presenters and a keynote speaker plus a panel discussion. The second day will consist of four guided site visits.
Infrastructure improvements and facilities re-construction with the help of UCLA Capital Programs: Reserve hopes to have the access road repaired and the water system re-installed prior to next summer and a rock wall designed and installed at the base of the redwood entrance sign. Re-construction will consist of the resident manager's house and the educational zone (museum, classroom, storage/workroom). We are also involved in the future planning and design of a multi-purpose research facility.
Establishment and coordination of community educational programs: The reserve intends to host open-houses, lecture series, interpretive hikes, and other such activities. We welcome suggestions.
Continued development of K-12 educational programs: Use will be made of UCLA extensive resources, faculty, and staff for such activities as science mentoring, teacher training, and extended summer programs.
Schedule of trails maintenance: Such a schedule will be established in cooperation with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council, Sierra Club and State of California agencies.
A library consisting of relevant publications, posters, videos, maps is in development. And a bibliography based on research at Stunt Ranch and in the Santa Monica Mountains will be compiled.
Inventory of flora/fauna: A Biology graduate student will update the 1984 inventory assembled by UCLA Professor Art Gibson and Tim Thomas of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Weather monitoring: After a resident manager is living on site, the reserve will purchase and install instruments to provide continuous weather records.
Long term management plan: An extensive exploration will be made regarding the use and management of the reserve as well as resource management issues for neighboring watersheds.
Interface on campus and in the community with various departments, institutes, organizations and agencies: Establishment and maintenance of such relationships facilitates open communication regarding the reserve's goals and activities, and encourages use and involvement in a wide variety of forums.
