Flora of the Santa Monica Mountains

We've been quite busy. The following are some of the highlights of the past year:

November 1995 through June 1996 reserve use: More than 2,700 visits were made to the reserve. Users included researchers, faculty and/or students from UCLA, CSUN, Cal State LA, Mission College, Pepperdine University, the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Classes and research interests that have relevance to the use of the reserve fall within the following five general categories: basic ecological research, archeological research, watershed studies, environmental design, and environmental economics and resource management. The reserve also hosted administrators, faculty and staff from the UC Natural Reserve System and representatives from the varied agencies/organizations active or interested in the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch in addition to teachers, parents, and students participating in the Cold Creek Docent's K-12 educational program.
January 1996: Official opening ceremony. Over 40 UCLA and UC NRS faculty, administrators and staff celebrated the reserve's opening with many high expectations for its future significance to the university and community.
February 1996: Stunt High Trail re-route. Volunteers from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and Sierra Club joined UCLA faculty, students and staff re-routed a portion of the Stunt High Trail for safety purposes. A nice plus...the re-route opened up a new view of the reserve and the Cold Creek watershed.
April 1996: Signing of License Agreement with Mountains Restoration Trust. Liza Riddle, Acting Director of UC Natural Reserve System and Frank Roberts, President of the Board of Directors of the Mountains Restoration Trust signed an agreement that formally recognizes the continued use of portions of the Stunt Ranch Reserve by the Cold Creek Docents for their award winning K-12 educational program.
October 1996: Calabasas/Malibu Fire. The fire came within one mile of the reserve several weeks prior to the third year anniversary of the 1993 Malibu/Topanga firestorm which burned and destroyed all the facilities at Stunt Ranch. The new fire provides opportunities for comparative studies of fire recovery with the 1993 Malibu/Topanga fire.
